Gong Xi Fa Cai!

[images via From Me to You]

Happy Chinese New Year! People born in the year of the rabbit are meant to be kind and loving, with grace, culture and have beautiful manners.

I'm not sure how beautiful my manners will be when I call dibs on a seat at the Cinema Alley or when I dance with flamboyant dragons at the Twilight parade - but I'm sure I do it with a smidgen of grace.

Grrr Giraffe

Most ingenious costume ever? Sure she can't move her shoulders or walk through doorways, but it is just so gosh darn clever.

There were giraffes in the 1950s....

Beehive

My hair is growing at an achingly slow rate. It's skimming my ear lobes and when straightened is just touches the nape of my neck.

It was a silly idea to chop it off, my hairdresser warned me not too. If I had a penny for every time someone compared me to Shirley Temple I would be able to afford tickets to Golden Plains.

It hasn't been all snips and snails, and puppy dogs tails - It has been easy to roll out of bed and not have to attempt to tame a mass of curls.

But now I want a beehive.

Golden

There are few things better than lying on the grass, listening to music in a warm patch of afternoon sunshine. Perhaps if the music were live and maybe if you were on holidays with a bunch of your mates. Yup that sounds nice. Very nice indeed. The organisers of the Golden Plains Music Festival think so too:

"It is staged in Autumn so the weather is warm and stable. Afternoon goes on all day; the sun like honey on the trees, then a giant spike of excitement goes kabloooey at nightfall. The Summer Fool is spent by March so GP is oblivious to that particular strain of vain folly.

Camp wherever you like, bring almost everything and anything if you want – you can bring a couch (perhaps with matching armchairs and an occasional table, with a drawer) and plant it in the Amphitheatre for the weekend, and soak. it. all. up. For a long weekend."

This isn't a commercially sponsored event, the fun isn't forced into a strict timetable, "so there’s room for traditions to evolve naturally and spontaneously. So far those to do so include The Boot, whereby for some unknown reason the crowd ’salutes’ their favourite performance of the festival by holding one of their shoes/boots/footwear of choice aloft.... Then there’s The Lampshade and The Door, both of unknown origin."

Believe it or not there are still tickets available and I haven't even mentioned how amazing the line up is (Joanna Newsom,Belle and Sebastian, Best Coast, Wavves, Architecture in Helsinki, The Middle East, Boy & Bear). I'm getting hot sweats just thinking about it.

It's times like these I wish I wasn't saving my moola.

A Macgyver maneuver for sun protection? I'm almost tempted to sans 'slip slop slap' for the shadow effect.

The sunniest ideas

If I were Cockney I would be telling every man and his dog that the Currant Bun was hotter than hot today.

Unfortunately I’m not cockney, but I do wish I were in England as the sun (ie. “currant bun”) has beating down on Sydney this week. It’s making me cream crackered (“knackered”) and a little bit barmy hence the cockney rhyming slang in this post.

I’ve been trying to use ‘mind over matter’ techniques to glide through this spell of hot weather without whinging too much, so I’ve been obessed with finding a winter coat. Thoughts of tweed, wool and brass buttons have danced through my head. Modcloth is a minefield of lushy outerwear.

Unfortunately my meditations on overcoats has yet to chill my core temperature, though they have been tremendously successful in lightening my purse.

The next sensible option is to wallow in a lovely cool cave – the cinema.

I'm also peachy keen to catch Beginners and Tamara Drewe.
